Product Description

Purpose of the Sherline Benchtop Mill XY Bases

Each of our four mill sizes is available as an XY base. You can purchase the base of any of our vertical mills as an XY base if you already own a vertical milling column for use with your lathe. The XY base offers a sturdier base and a larger work area than the lathe. Lathe owners can then swap the headstock and motor/speed control from their lathe to the vertical milling column in approximately 60 seconds.

XY bases have also found their way into the industrial market and are used in various manufacturing setups.

If You Have a Standard Mill Column Base

Please note that milling column bases made before 1995 must be modified in order to work with this XY base. You can return your older vertical milling column to the factory to be re-machined and used with an XY base rather than purchasing the entire vertical milling machine (Contact us for pricing).

Vertical milling column bases made after 1995 do not need to be modified. This combination saves you the amount of money included in the cost of the vertical mill for the column but gives you the same machine minus the headstock and motor/speed control.

About the 18″ NexGen DRO Benchtop Mill XY Base

The NexGen DRO Benchtop Mill XY base is the same base used in our 5800-series NexGen DRO benchtop mill. It has DRO handwheels, encoders, and sensors and will connect to your digital readout box (not included).

Standard Features for the NexGen DRO Benchtop Mill XY Base

  • 18″ Mill Base
  • 18″ Extended Mill Table
  • Sherline DRO mills are outfitted with the special DRO 2″ (51mm) handwheels on the Y-axis leadscrew and X-axis table feed screw. These handwheels can be reset to zero electronically with the push of a button on the DRO display box. Each handwheel has laser-engraved aluminum handwheel collars.
  • Oil reservoir on the X/Y axes
  • Travel: X=8.65″ (220 mm), Y=11.0″ (279 mm)

Optional Y-axis Leadscrew Cover Upgrades for the Mill XY Base

Brass tube cover for the rear of the Y-axis*
Accordion way cover for the front and rear of the Y-axis
Rigid Mill Column Base

*You must purchase the Rigid Mill Column Base (P/N 50055 or 50056) to work with the brass tube cover. The round column base of the 8-direction mill will not fit on this base.

About the Sherline CNC-Ready 8-Direction Benchtop Mill

Our CNC-ready benchtop mill is perfect for the customer looking for a mini CNC milling machine to make small, precision parts. The deluxe 8-direction milling machine offers the most versatility of any Sherline mill. In addition to X-axis, Y-axis, and Z-axis travels, there are five additional directions that the headstock spindle can be positioned to do drilling or milling on your part from virtually any angle.

All our CNC milling machines are made in the USA, and our customer service is second to none. Although our machines are small, they can produce high-quality precision parts. Our CNC mill will not only cut wood and plastic but is also rigid and accurate enough to cut aluminum and steel parts. This mill is a desktop-size machine with full-size machine precision and accuracy.

Sherline CNC-ready mills have factory-installed stepper motor mounts in place of the handwheels and are ready to apply stepper motors and computer numeric controls (CNC). CNC-Ready milling machines are not turn-key machines and cannot be used until stepper motors have been installed. All milling machines that are described as “CNC-ready” have stepper motor mounts but do NOT include stepper motors, computer, or CNC software.

Sherline recommends using dual-shaft stepper motors so that handwheels can be applied to the rear shaft for manual control. With that in mind, handwheels for each axis are included with the machine, although you can’t use them until you install stepper motors. Sherline offers high-quality stepper motors and CNC options.

You can also find several aftermarket suppliers for motors, drivers, and software to complete the CNC system. You supply the 486 or better computer. See our CNC Dealers page for a list of suppliers and links to their home pages.

Notes on ordering a metric mill

Most of our cutting tools, like center drills, are manufactured in a fractional size. If you have a metric machine with metric holders, like collets or end mill holders, you will need to order fractional holders to accommodate our cutting tools.

Standard equipment for the CNC-Ready 8-Direction Benchtop Mill includes:

  • A powerful 90V DC motor with electronic speed controller
  • 14″ base
  • The handwheels are included and can be mounted to the end of the stepper motors to maintain manual control when needed.* 2-1/2″ (63mm) adjustable “zero” handwheel on the Z-axis and 2″ (51mm) adjustable “zero” handwheels on the X- and Y-axes. Each handwheel has laser-engraved aluminum handwheel collars
*NOTE: CNC-ready machines cannot be operated manually unless double-shaft stepper motors are installed.
  • 22.75″ (70 mm) x 13.0″ (330 mm) table with two T-slots
  • ¼” Drill Chuck w/ key, #1 Morse arbor with drawbolt
  • 2″ column riser block
  • Laser-engraved scales on the base and table
  • Pulleys, drive belt, three hexagonal keys, spindle bars, gib removal tool, eight-foot three-wire power cord, and instruction manual
  • Oil reservoirs on the X/Y axes and the Z-axis help keep critical parts lubricated. These were initially developed for CNC machines that run constantly for hours on end but can benefit manual machines as well
  • Brass leadscrew cover that keeps chips off the rear of the Y-axis leadscrew

The A Package Includes:

  • Step block hold-down set
  • 5/32″ Sherline hex T-driver
  • 3-piece center drill set
  • Fly cutter w/carbide bit
